Join in free DPIRD-led Polyphagous Shot-hole Borer Workshop

Thursday 3rd September 2026

Australia's response to Polyphagous Shot-hole Borer (PSHB) is transitioning from eradication to long-term management, making community awareness and early detection more important than ever.

Join in a free Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) led practical workshop to learn how to identify the signs of PSHB, collect samples correctly and understand the next steps if you suspect this highly destructive invasive pest. Whether you own a property, volunteer in bushland or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, you can play an important role as another set of informed eyes helping protect the trees that define our landscapes and communities.

Protecting Our Trees Starts with Knowing What to Look For

While Polyphagous Shot-hole Borer (PSHB) has not been detected outside of the Perth metropolitan area, community awareness of what to look for to help protect our region's trees is becoming increasingly important as experts have determined that eradication of this highly destructive pest is no longer technically feasible.

As our national response to this pest transitions from eradication efforts to long-term management by the end of 2026 there is greater need for community awareness, early detection and practical action to help slow the spread of PSHB. At just 2 mm long (about the size of a sesame seed), PSHB is easy to overlook. Yet, this tiny beetle has the potential to cause enormous damage, attacking hundreds of tree species and, in many cases, leading to branch dieback and tree death.

Whether you own a rural property, live on a suburban block with mature trees, volunteer in bushlands/reserves, or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, you could be among the first to notice signs of PSHB.

Would you know what to look for?

To help answer that question, Leschenault Biosecurity Group is partnering with experts from DPIRD to deliver this free practical community workshop. Participants will learn:

  • how to recognise the signs of PSHB
  • how to correctly collect samples for identification
  • what actions to take if PSHB is suspected

We hope to see you there!
