Community-designed Asphalt Art project completion to improve road safety near the Apple Fun Park and Pump Track in Donnybrook

Developed by the Donnybrook Town Team in response to long‑standing community concerns, the Asphalt Art project is intended to increase driver awareness, encourage safer speeds and improve interactions between vehicles and pedestrians, particularly with children and families.

The initiative was proposed by the Donnybrook Town Team and approved by Council in February 2025 as a public art installation and road safety treatment on Shire‑managed roads, informed by research showing that painted road treatments can improve safety outcomes in high‑pedestrian environments.

The artwork was designed through engagement with local children, teenagers and residents. Despite several weather‑related delays in late 2025, delivery was supported by the Town Team Movement, which coordinated approvals and logistics to enable the artwork to proceed. While early plans included community participation in the painting, the final approach ensured the artwork could be delivered safely and efficiently while retaining the community‑designed concept. The painting was completed by professional artists on Wednesday 11 March 2026, with traffic management and implementation funded through an RAC grant secured by the Donnybrook Town Team.

Shire President Vivienne MacCarthy said the project highlights the value of community‑led initiatives supported by evidence‑based planning and strong partnerships.

“This project shows how community ideas, backed by research and collaboration, can translate into practical improvements in road safety and placemaking. I congratulate Judith Morrisey, the Donnybrook Town Team and the Town Team Movement for their persistence, and thank the RAC for supporting the initiative. On behalf of Council, I also extend my sincere appreciation to the community members – including local children and young people – who helped shape the original design to create a safer environment around the Apple Fun Park.”

The project supports the Shire’s Council Plan by contributing to a responsibly planned and well‑maintained built environment, creating vibrant and welcoming towns, and improving safe and convenient movement through increased road safety and pedestrian awareness. Its completion reflects Council’s commitment to empowering community groups to deliver townscape works through strong partnerships, and the Shire thanks all partners, funders and community members involved for their contribution to improving safety and amenity in Donnybrook.

Why this project matters

Collins Street and Reserve Street are key access points to the Apple Fun Park and Pump Track and experience consistently high pedestrian use. For many years, the community raised concerns about vehicle speeds and driver behaviour in this location.

The Asphalt Art project responds directly to those concerns using a proven road safety treatment to increase driver awareness and encourage safer speeds. By combining community‑led design, evidence‑based planning and strong partnerships, the project delivers an immediate safety improvement while enhancing the look and feel of the town centre. The treatment is designed to fade over time, ensuring no long‑term maintenance burden for the Shire while still delivering meaningful safety and placemaking benefits.
