Local Government Elections - 2023

Optional Preferential Voting - how do I choose my top candidate and vote in the right way?

Number the candidate you want elected the most as #1.

Then, you can continue numbering your next preferred candidates in descending order of who you want voted in the most. You don’t have to number every candidate, but it’s encouraged that you do!

How many Councillor seats are being filled?

9 seats are open, but you should still vote for more than 9 people.

If, for whatever reason, one of the initially elected Councillors is unable to continue in their role, the Candidate who ended 10th in the voting results may be able to step in and fill the vacancy without an extraordinary election taking place.

Where are we at on the Election Timeline?

On Friday 15 September 2023, the WA Electoral Commission commenced posting electoral packages to regional WA via AusPost.

  • We are aware that some electors have not yet received their Ballot Papers. Contact the WA Electoral Commission returning officer or reach out to us so that we can arrange getting some delivered to you.

Election Day is on Saturday 21 October 2023, which closes as of 6:00pm.

  • Results are expected to be available later that evening.
  • There are 9 seats available to fill (5 candidates for a 4 year term, and 4 candidates for a 2 year term), but in the event that one of the original 9 who are voted in is unable to continue, those who were next in the voting results may be able to step in to the role and fill the vacancy, without an extraordinary election. Make sure you number as many boxes as possible - your vote matters!

On Thursday 26 October 2023, there will be a Special Council Meeting to swear in the new Council.

  • The elected candidates will be sworn in and form our new Council. At this meeting, the Shire President will be voted in by the Councillors.
