A Highlight from June 2025: BIKE RESCUE

A group of enthusiastic local students have proven their mechanical skills, thanks to the success of the Dismantle Bike Rescue Program held right here in Donnybrook from 24 to 27 June 2025 - and we're still hearing about how great it was!

The program included 20 students in 4 days of hands of learning and creativity culminating in a ride on the Donnybrook Pump Track. The students rescued bicycles destined for landfill and transformed them into safe, rideable bikes.

Held at the Donnybrook District High School (DDHS) and at the Donnybrook Pump Track, the program provided students not only with mechanical skills but also with valuable lessons in sustainability, teamwork, and resilience. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, participants learned how to strip down, repair, and rebuild bicycles that had formerly transported tourists in Rottnest Island.

Over the course of the program, students refurbished 20 bikes. The initiative has saved significant waste from entering landfill while giving young people practical skills and a sense of achievement.

Quote from Brendan Thomson, Program Manager:

“The program builds a sense of mastery and confidence in the students as they get to see the results of their labour.”

Quote from Fiona Hunter, Associate Principal (DDHS):

“Students enjoy the opportunity to get out of the classroom setting and learn new skills.”

This program has been made possible thanks to support from the WA Government and $13,750 in funding from the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS) via the 2024-2025 Outdoor Active Recreation Participation Program.
