The Shire of Donnybrook Balingup entered its Unrestricted Burning Period on Sunday 27 April 2025. As we continue into Winter, now is an ideal time to start preparing for the upcoming fire season and reducing the fuel load on your property, and for our region that often includes planned burning or burn-offs. A lot of landowners have started such activities, but in the wrong conditions, a planned burn can escape and become an uncontrollable fire. No one wants that to happen, however a number of fires have escaped recently. It is requested that everyone continues to remain vigilant – prioritise the safety of not just yourself and your property, but also your neighbours and the broader community.
Understanding how a fire behaves is vital when preparing and executing a planned burn. Fire behaviour is largely influenced by three factors: the fuel available to burn, the topography (or terrain) of the area, and prevailing weather conditions. Undertaking a planned burn is a big responsibility, and involves recognising and managing all associated risks.
