What is an informal vote?

As described by the WA Electoral Commission, an informal vote is a ballot paper that is either left blank, or does not show preferences in accordance with the law. These ballot papers neither contribute to the election of a candidate, nor are they included in the quota or absolute majority. A vote may be deemed informal for a number of reasons such as:

  • it's blank or unmarked,
  • ticks or crosses have been used when numbering in order of preference is required,
  • the required number of boxes haven't been marked, or
  • it has writing on it which identifies the elector.

When are they properly considered Councillors?

A Special Council Meeting has been called for 4:00pm on Thursday 26 October 2023, where the purpose of the meeting is for the swearing in of the new Councillors and election of the Shire President and Deputy Shire President.

At present, they are still referred to as successful candidates until they are sworn in.
