Local Heritage Framework Review

The Shire was recently successful in obtaining a $20,000 grant from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage's through their 2021 - 2022 Local Government Heritage Consultant Grants Program.

The grant has been awarded to the Shire to engage a heritage professional to review its Municipal Heritage Inventory in order to create a contemporary and accurate heritage framework including a:

  • Local Heritage Survey (previously referred to as Municipal Heritage Inventory);
  • Local Heritage List; and
  • Heritage Local Planning Policy.

The Shire is pleased to engage Laura Gray of Heritage Intelligence, to undertake the review. As an architect specialising in heritage projects in Western Australia, Laura brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this project.

In addition to Laura's expertise, the Shire is engaging with the community whose input, local knowledge and information will be invaluable to this project.

In this regard, the Shire, together with the appointed consultant, Laura Gray, will be holding two community information sessions:

Date

Time

Location

Wednesday
17 August 2022

The community, as a key stakeholder in the cultural and heritage value of the Shire, will be presented an opportunity towards the end of 2022 to nominate places they feel are worthy of identification within the Heritage Framework.

The information sessions will provide an opportunity for members of the community to meet the appointed consultant, be provided with further information about the heritage framework, the place nomination process, and the Review Project as a whole.

There will also be an opportunity for the consultant to answer any questions that the community may have about this project.

Local Planning Framework Review

The Shire has commenced a review of the Local Planning Framework including;

Public consultation regarding this Project is expected to commence towards the end of 2022 / early 2023. In preparation for this future consultation, a preliminary engagement survey was published from 10 December 2021 to 7 February 2022 for community participation.

The key purpose of the engagement survey was;
  • to translate broad themes from the Strategic Community Plan (Council Plan) into actionable objectives within the context of the Planning framework;
  • to find out how the community would like to be engaged with during the consultation stage of the project; and
  • to establish a mailing list of all community members that are directly interested in the review project.

There were a total of 21 questions within the survey and a total of 184 participants.

A summary of the survey results was presented to Council at the Ordinary Meeting in March (Item 9.1.3).

A copy of the minutes outlining the survey results can be viewed here.
