MEDIA RELEASE: Donnybrook Sporting Precinct on Track

Planning and design for the Donnybrook Community, Sports, Recreation and Events Precinct at VC Mitchell Park has been fast tracked with the State Government releasing an early grant fund of $250,000 (out of the total $6million).

The Shire of Donnybrook Balingup recently appointed the services of MCG Architects to assist in developing more detailed plans prior to the release of a public tender later in the year. Earlier this month, members of the community were invited to register their expression of interest in becoming part of the Stakeholder Reference Group for the VC Mitchell Park redevelopment. Two community members will join the existing group of representatives from the local sporting clubs who will continue to meet on a regular basis to help guide the Shire through the project.

Shire President Cr Brian Piesse said “this project will become an important community asset and will attract a wave of younger families to the Shire. As this project transitions into detailed planning, design and an all-embracing management model it is important to have a strong representation from the community during this process.”. The Shire advises that broader community consultation on the project will occur over coming months.

In August 2020, the WA Government announced the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup would receive $6million to fund redevelopment of the VC Mitchell Park precinct as part of the State’s overall $300million COVID Recovery Package.

Shire Chief Executive Officer Ben Rose said “the Shire will now consider the $3million loan as part of its budget deliberations in coming months. In December 2020, the Council adopted its 20-year Long Term Financial Plan which identified the affordability of the loan and ongoing operating costs of the new precinct and buildings.”

As part of its March 2021 Ordinary Meeting, Council resolved to progress with an early works package for a hockey training facility on the site. Final approval for funding and development of the hockey training facility will be subject to State Government approvals.

The community will be invited to provide feedback on the concept masterplan that will be released as the project progresses.
